Chapter 3: Katieâs First Social
Despite all the problems, the social started on time. There was plenty of food and with a tablecloth spread over the repaired table, you couldnât even tell it had been broken.
When people started showing up, Katie forgot all about Jacob. At least she tried to. She often found her eyes wandering around the room while she talked to someone else until they settled on him. It wasnât a conscious choice, it just seemed to keep happening.
Even with the distraction, it was still the best night of Katieâs life. She spent most of the evening at Emmaâs side talking to boys, playing games, and generally having a good time. Near the end of the social, Emma pulled Katie outside and took her on a walk under the stars.
âItâs a beautiful night isnât it?â Emma asked.
âJah, it is,â Katie answered, looking at her friend suspiciously. âI know you didnât pull me out here just to look at the stars.â
âI just wanted to talk,â Emma told her.
âAbout what?â
âWell, the night is almost over,â Emma stated. âDo you think any of the boys are going to ask to give you a buggy ride home?
âI donât think so,â Katie said. âNone of the boys seemed very interested in me.â
âIâm not so sure,â Emma told her. âSeveral of them seemed interested to me.â
âI donât think I want a ride from any of them,â Katie said, but she wasnât sure why. Wasnât this what was supposed to happen at a social? It just didnât feel right to her. âWhat about you?â
âIâm already home,â Emma laughed, âbut I think Joseph would give me a ride if I wasnât.â
âJah, you did spend a lot of time talking to him.â
Emma put her arm around Katie and turned them back towards the barn. âLetâs head back to the barn and see about getting you a ride home.â
She didnât know where the thought came from, but it slipped out before she could stop it. âMaybe Jacob can give me a ride home.â
âJah, Iâm sure he will,â Emma said. âYouâre like a sister to him.â
Katieâs heart dropped. She hadnât realized until that very moment that she didnât want to be like a sister. She wanted to be more than just Jacobâs sisterâs friend.
But what can I do? Katie asked herself as they walked back to the barn in silence.
When they got back to the barn, Jacob was waiting outside. âThere you are, Katie,â he said with a big smile. âI was afraid you got a ride home with another boy and didnât even say good bye.â
âNeh, we just went for a walk.â
Jacob stood there fidgeting for a moment. When he spoke, the words were slow in coming out and Katie could barely hear him. âSince you are still here, I was wondering if you would like me to take you home?â he asked.
Katie looked at him with surprise. She could tell from his nervousness that he wasnât asking because he felt obligated to help his sisterâs friend. He truly wanted to take her on a buggy ride.
